FAQ

My general attorney has always handled my telecommunications issues. Do I really need a telecommunications attorney?

Telecommunications is a highly complex area of the law and requires a detailed knowledge and expertise. We are specialists in telecommunications issues and are hired specifically for that reason. No matter how capable your general attorney may be, he or she is not qualified to address the unique issues that you face in the telecommunications industry. Indeed, in most cases, general attorneys do not even have visibility to or knowledge of the issues you face, let alone the knowledge or experience to manage them properly. We not only have vastly more knowledge and experience than your general attorney, we almost always have vastly more knowledge and experience than the "telecom attorney" with whom we interact. This allows us not only to present you with far more options, but gives you the opportunity to achieve the results you desire.

Why should I hire TLG rather than a large law firm with a telecommunications department?

The attorneys at TLG are nationally recognized experts in telecommunications litigation, arbitration, regulatory and transactional issues. Because we focus exclusively on telecom issues, and have more than forty years of combined experience in those issues, in most cases, we have already addressed the issue you face--often on many occasions--and understand the approaches that are available to address those issues. This not only ensures that you will get the best possible legal service, but that you will not have to pay to us up to speed. This may not be the case with a large firm, where the attorneys often do not have either the experience or focus that we have. Moreover, because we are a small firm, when you hire TLG, you will always have access to the firm's most senior attorneys--you will not be shuffled off to a young associate who you never meet and who does not have the required experience to best serve your needs.

But, can a small firm really provide the service of a large firm?

Absolutely. We have spent decades representing telecommunications companies in litigations, regulatory and transactional matters involving the largest corporations in America. In virtually every case, these corporations are represented by large national firms. Our clients will tell you--and our record of success demonstrates--that we always control the matters in which we are involved and that our substantive knowledge and focus is a very substantial benefit to our clients. Indeed, we have specifically decided to remain small to ensure that we can continue to provide our clients with the best available legal services.

Why should I hire a law firm in Washington, DC rather than one closer to my business?

TLG's practice is nationwide. We routinely represent clients in all parts of the country, and have appeared before state and federal courts, regulatory agencies or arbitration tribunals in almost every major state. Where it makes sense for the client, we associate in qualified local counsel. This makes it possible for our clients to benefit from our telecommunications expertise, while having access to local counsel familiar with local procedures and who can make routine appearance that do not require our attendance. Where necessary, we travel to your location for meetings or to attend hearings addressing complex issues.

What are your billing arrangements?

We generally bill our clients on an hourly basis. Our hourly rates vary depending on the type of service being rendered and the experience of the attorney providing the service. We are also more than pleased to discuss alternative billing arrangements, such as flat or project fees, that make sense to the client and are fair to us. We understand that legal services are expensive and we make every effort to ensure that services are provided in a fair, open and efficient manner. Clients are generally billed monthly, receiving a detailed billing statements showing each and every service provided and the amount charged. All expenses are passed through to our clients at our cost.

Does TLG take matters on contingency?

We generally do not accept matters on contingency. However, we are willing to discuss creative billing arrangements under which we will reduce our hourly rate in return for a reduced contingency percentage.

Does TLG handle any matters that do not involve telecommunications?

Yes. Although we specialize in telecommunications issues, and spend the vast majority of our time on matters involving these issues, in appropriate circumstances, we do apply the skills we have developed in the telecommunications arena to the representation of clients with other transactional litigation and M&A issues.

What is your practice philosophy?

First and foremost, we are truly dedicated to client service. We make every effort to develop legal strategies and tactics that allow our clients to meet their business needs in a timely and efficient manner. Although we truly believe that litigation should always be viewed as a last resort, where it is necessary, we understand how to win and we make every conceivable effort to ensure that our clients meet their objectives whether through a favorable settlement agreement or judgment rendered by a court, arbitration panel or regulatory agency.
